Cub Scouts to collect for troop ‘Cheer Packages’

Goal to send 1,000 gifts of love from home to troops overseas

If cheering our American troops overseas during the holidays is something you’ve always intended to do, but the holidays snuck up on you before you could get around to it, then Galt scouts have the solution for you.

Galt Cub Scouts from Pack 84 and the ladies of the Girl Scout Dry Creek Service Unit will join forces with a unique group of women from Galt, Lodi and Stockton, who make sending cheer packages to soldiers each year a top priority.

In Galt, LaRonda Templeton leads the charge and has arranged to partner with local scouts to allow the entire community to take part in creating the goal of 1,000 cheer packages this holiday season.

Scouts will be dropping off collection bags door-to-door in many Galt neighborhoods. The bags are for residents to fill with a variety of supplies and treats our soldiers find themselves missing while they are away from home.

The bags will contain a flyer describing what items are most desired and most needed. Most items on the list can and need to be purchased in trial, travel or mini sizes so they can be easily included in cheer packages that will be sent in the mail.

All you have to do, once you receive your bag, is take note of the pickup date that will be included with your donation bag. Just fill it up with the items you want to donate and set the bag out in a clear and visible spot on your front porch, but not on the curb.

Items include anything from aspirin and ibuprofen to popcorn, Pop Tarts, gum, DVDs, comics, pens, small toys, mouthwash, clippers and grooming supplies to pre-sweetened drink mixes, nuts, dried fruits, Christmas items, playing cards, Kleenex, shampoo, feminine supplies, sunblock, and so much more.

Please be aware – only non-perishable foods are allowed, and pork, pork by-products, fruit and yeast are not allowed in Middle East locations. Please read all labels carefully.

With shipping dates already nearing in order to get packages overseas and to the troops in time for the holidays, all donation need to be picked up by Nov. 1.

You can also help by donating cash for shipping charges or by providing the names and addresses of soldiers in Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan, especially those from the Galt area.

Any individual, business, church, club or team can participate. If you do not receive a donation bag but would like to take part in this community-wide drive to cheer our troops, or if your bag does not get picked up, please call Templeton at (209) 745-2849.
