Sixth grade students celebrate ancient Egypt

Sixth grade students at Lake Canyon Elementary have been studying ancient Egypt as part of their social studies curriculum. From pharaohs to slaves, they have been learning about the class system that existed and the social pyramid that kept everyone in their proper placement.

To bring their discussion to life, teachers Valerie Seamons, Jacquie Hill and Debra Novak had the students blindly draw slips of paper with a job on it. Many students were slaves and farmers, several were merchants or artisans, a few were nobility, and one lucky student became the pharaoh.

They celebrated with a Feast of the Nile. The pharaoh, Edgar Hurtado, and his government officials, military officers and priest were the first to eat. They were offered seats in the “banquet” room. The rest of the students came through the food line by class order, with slaves being served last. They had to sit in another room to eat.

The food included everything from fresh fruit to main dishes of chicken and tacos. Students were encouraged to stay with the Egyptian theme for their food, and many did. There was Egyptian bread, pomegranates, hummus and beans.  The luncheon ended with a special cake decorated in an Egyptian theme, complete with a three-dimensional pyramid, a Nile river and a sphinx.
