Galt man found dead in Acampo
By Rachael Ackerman-Herald Editor
The sheriff’s office received a call of shots fired in the 5800 block of East Jahant Road at around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by another call at approximately 11:45 p.m., advising deputies that the body of a Hispanic man had been found laying in the road.
When deputies arrived, they discovered the body of Adam Mariano Campa (Partida), 28, of Galt in the roadway at the same location. The victim had several gunshot wounds.
Medics arrived on scene minutes later and pronounced Campa dead at the scene.
Sheriff Deputy Les Garica said there is little information available about the chain of events that led to Campa’s death. Due to the ongoing investigation, little detail on what was discovered at the scene will be released, but they are interested in finding one man, also from Galt, in connection with Campa’s death.
What police do know is that the man suspected of shooting and killing Campa, Anthony Adell Hubbard, 22, a friend of Campa according to his family, started the night on the run from the law for an attempted robbery.
Galt police report having initiated a search for Hubbard early in the evening of Oct. 31 after witnesses identified him as the man who had attempted to rob a group of men gathered at a home in the 300 block of Sixth Street in Galt.
Galt Police Lieutenant Ken Erickson said Hubbard was reported by witnesses as having arrived at the residence where he was acquainted with some of the men hanging out in the front yard.
Witnesses told police Hubbard became very agitated at one point, demanding money from those gathered. Erickson said that, while no one reports seeing Hubbard with a weapon, his behavior led them to believe he may indeed have a weapon and that, at that point, they fled the scene in fear.
Witnesses who remained said the unidentified driver of the vehicle in which Hubbard arrived coaxed an agitated Hubbard back into the vehicle and left.
At that point, Erickson said Galt police issued a “be on the lookout for” notice on Hubbard to all surrounding law enforcement agencies.
Putting the pieces together of how Hubbard got from Galt to Jahant Road in Acampo is a critical and ongoing part of the investigation.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s department joined in the search for Hubbard early Sunday morning after a deputy was fired upon while making a noise disturbance call.
A sheriff deputy arrived at a home at Ganzer and Kost roads just outside of Galt in response to a loud party call, only to find himself under fire.
Sacramento County Sheriff Spokesman, Sergeant Tim Curran, said on Monday that when the deputy arrived at the scene he called for back up and waited in his vehicle for back up to arrive. As he was waiting, said Curran, shots were fired with the deputy reporting that he felt the shots were being fired at him. No one was injured.
Back up arrived at the scene and a perimeter was established, as well as a helicopter search to no avail. Police filed the report as an assault on a police officer.
Curran would not say why sheriffs believe Hubbard is a suspect in that incident, but said deputies know Hubbard was at the party and that “He is just someone we want to talk to.”
Sheriff’s suffered a false alarm in the search for Hubbard on Monday afternoon when an anonymous caller reported that they believed Hubbard was in Herald Community Park. Deputies surrounded the area and conducted a search, also to no avail. Curran said that call was unfounded.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department issued the notice for Hubbard on Nov. 1.
Police warn that Hubbard is considered armed and dangerous, and advise that no attempts to approach Hubbard be made. If you know of Hubbard’s location, you are asked to call the nearest law enforcement agency.
Hubbard has had previous contact with law enforcement in both San Joaquin and Sacramento counties. Court records show Hubbard pled guilty in San Joaquin County in 2006 to making criminal threats, domestic violence and vehicle theft, and last year pled guilty to possession of stolen property.
Sacramento County court records show Hubbard pled no contest to assault with a deadly weapon charges in November 2008 after having pled no contest to drug possession and evasion charges in May of the same year.
Campa’s family is honest when they share that Adam had been in trouble with the law in the past as well, having served prison time in 2007 for a drug conviction.
Campa’s father, Raul Partida of Stockton, and his mother, Dalia Farfan of Galt, spoke to The Galt Herald early in the week to say that their son, although no angel, had been diligently making an effort to change his life for the sake of his only child, a daughter, and had been in no legal trouble since 2007.
“Adam was a very playful, happy kid growing up. He loved his grandma and grandpa, and he respected his family,” said Partida. “When my wife and I separated about 12 years ago, though, he just started hanging out with the wrong people and getting involved in drugs.”
Partida and Farfan agreed that Adam was a troubled child and shared that their son has been in prison on several occasions but, after the last time he was released, the whole family saw a change in him, a change they credit to Campa’s daughter.
“He stayed away from all of his old friends that he got into trouble with, and drew closer to his daughter,” said Farfan. “It was like he was enjoying the first of everything with his daughter. This would have been the first Thanksgiving and Christmas, and they were just looking forward to everything.”
To Campa’s mother, the past is the past and should remain the past.
“Adam told me once he was glad I had given him my last name because he said he had ruined the Partida name,” said Farfan. “He was working to restore the honor of his name. He was trying to find a job, keeping his appointments, and spending time with his daughter almost every day. He said to us he was trying to clear his bad reputation and that he knew that was going to take some time, but that he was committed to doing it for his daughter and his family.”
The family said the only thing they know about the night Campa was killed is that he left for a Halloween party with Hubbard. They have been told that Hubbard began to get out of control at the party they were attending and that, since Campa had brought Hubbard to the party, he was the one to get him to leave and to go with Hubbard.
What happened between the time the pair left the party and Campa’s death is a mystery. Still waiting for details from police, the family can only wonder what happened that day to lead to the death of a beloved family member.
Partida and Farfan said the news of Adam’s death hit the family hard and that initially they were very angry, but once they calmed down, only sadness and a desire to see justice done remain.
“I was very, very hurt and angry. This was a friend of Adam’s so there was a betrayal there,” said Partida. “I just wanted to get a hold of somebody and do something, but then I came to my senses. All we want now is for him to be caught and tried.”
Farfan agrees.
“I want justice for my son,” said Farfan, who said she feels for the parents and family of Hubbard. “I don’t hate the person who did this to my son. I just want justice. It just isn’t right. No one has the right to take anyone’s life.”
In the meantime, the family wants the community to know that, even after making mistakes, their son was working to change, a change that was to include mentoring other juveniles headed down the wrong path.
“He would say, ‘Mom, I know I did bad,’” said Farfan. “He wanted a chance to tell others that this is no life. It was one of his goals to talk to the ‘young punks,’ as he called them, to keep them from making the same mistakes as he did.”
No matter the time spent away or the trouble that had come in the past, the Partida family is proud of the man they saw Campa becoming and said they will forever wonder what he could have been.
“He was very artistic, loved to draw, loved art, and could make you laugh, was socializing and here at home doing family things,” said Farfan. “He came home loving the oldies, stuff I would approve of, instead of the gang-banger stuff, and was a part of the family instead of always isolating himself. He was waiting for probation restrictions on where he could go to be lifted so he could search further for work and a new life. He was in prison for 18 months, but he came home with a whole new attitude – a positive attitude, even attending private Bible studies at the Kingdom Hall. We had just gotten him back.”
To lose a son so close to making what they felt was a permanent life change is heartbreaking, said the family.
“I never gave up on my son,” said Partida. “I never would have.”
If you have information on the location of Hubbard call Galt police at (209) 366-7000.
