From the Archives - First Drum Major at Galt High School

Galt High School’s first drum major led the first marching band in 1933. The position of drum major originated in the British Army with the Corps of Drums in 1650. For high schools, he/she is the leader of a marching band and is usually positioned at the head of the band. The drum major is often dressed in more ornate clothing and is responsible for providing commands to the band, leading them while marching, and directing them what to play, when to play, and what time to keep. In 1933, that drum major was Talbert Spenhoff. In succeeding years, there would be numerous drum majors at Galt High School, including Jere Lewis, Bill Stefan, Gerry Young, Melinda Melhaff and Carleen Rothenberger.
