From the Archives - Joseph Lloyd Orvis

Wisconsin born Joseph Lloyd Orvis was a plumber and sheet metal worker by trade and came to Galt around 1907. He lived for a time with his partner Frank Ritz, a native New Yorker and local machinist. When Ritz married local Galt socialite, Maude Ferguson, Orvis went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Tracy but continued to live in Galt. Joe Orvis would eventually return and continue his own business as a sheet metal worker. Pictured is Orvis with some of his handiwork. The building where he lived and worked on C Street (in the photo) would later become the first Galt Library.
