David Olson

David Olson was a gunner’s mate aboard the aircraft carrier USS Monterey in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. In the Fall of 1944, the Monterey was part of Task Force 38 under Admiral Marc Mitscher that participated in Battles of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf. In 1945, she supported Okinawa operations by launching strikes against the Japanese islands of Nansei Shoto and Kyushu. The USS Monterey was in Tokyo Bay during the formal Japanese surrender. After his military service, David Olson joined the faculty in the social studies department of Galt Joint Union High School and remained there for 23 years before moving on to Estrellita Continuation High School for a few more.
