This unique photo was taken around 1880 and shows Galt’s Fourth Street commercial section. The businesses along the street face west, toward the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks. A keen eye can spot several early structures, such as the Brewster building on the left. Behind that is the first Galt Grammar School with its bell tower. The first city water tower is behind the buildings in the center. On the far right is the Whitaker and Ray building with its department store. The flagpole was once the center of town but has since been moved south. This photo was taken from the bell tower of the Episcopal Church on Third Street.
