Orvis and Ritz

Around 1910, Orvis and Ritz had their plumbing and machine shop on the northwest corner of 7th and C streets. Wisconsin-born Joseph Lloyd Orvis was a plumber by trade and came to Galt around 1907. He lived for a time with his partner Frank Ritz, a native New Yorker, and local machinist. When Ritz married local Galt socialite, Maude Ferguson, Orvis went to work for the railroad in Sacramento but continued to live in Galt. Upon retirement, he moved to St. Helena in the Napa Valley. In the meantime, Frank Ritz continued the plumbing/machine shop business and helped raise two daughters, Martha and Cleora, until he passed away at the early age of 51 in 1927.
