Joseph Saner

Joseph Saner was the patriarch of the Saner Ranch southwest of Galt. The Swiss native came to this section of south Sacramento County in 1883 and married his wife Mary in 1887. By 1908, Saner had accumulated 500 acres when his life was cut short by an unknown assailant. The prime suspect was Frank Barnhardt, the suitor of the eldest daughter Frieda. Barnhardt had been fired and banished from the ranch a few days before the murder. He spent two weeks in jail before being released for lack of evidence. The murderer was never found, and the two lovers married a short time later.
