Spaans Cookie Company
A photo taken around 1962 shows the William Spaans family in front of the business that Spaans opened in 1958, the Spaans Cookie Company. The Kansas born Bill Spaans grew up in a Dutch family in Michigan. His parents operated a Dutch bakery where Bill got his “baking” education. In 1934, Bill married the former Anna Start and opened their bakery in Michigan. After moving to Modesto, Calif., and opening another bakery, the Spaans family moved to Galt and opened the Spaans Cookie Company in 1958. The C Street business has been there for the last 63 years. In the photo are Bill and Anna Spaans and five of their six children, including the oldest Jim, who runs the family business.
