John Hurd Hickey

John Hurd Hickey was born in Overton County, Tennessee in 1828 and came to California around 1852. He married Mary Isabelle Bryant in 1858, and the couple established a farm in the northern section of San Joaquin County. Hickey purchased a general store at the intersection of Liberty and Elliott roads with his brother William around 1861 and renamed it Hickey and Bro. The area was initially known as Hawk’s Corner after a Mr. Hawkins, the previous owner of the Hickey store. Hickey could not get a post office with Hawk’s Corner’s name, so he renamed Elliott’s town after the pioneer rancher Dr. George Elliott who had passed away a few years previous. Elliott became a town with the opening of its post office in 1863. The town no longer exists.
