Morris Lassiter, son of Paul Lassiter, was killed last Saturday when a gravel bank caved in on he and his father near the Sacramento army air depot. Father and son were digging gravel, putting it in a washtub and dumping it into their touring car. Suddenly the nine-foot bank caved in, completely burying the 14-year-old boy; and the father, partially covered, was seriously injured.
Floyd E. Taylor, principal of the Galt Joint Union High School, announces that the coveted Reader’s Digest Award for achievement has been won by the valedictorian of the class of 1939, Miss Jean Davis. She will receive an engrossed parchment certificate upon graduation.

Bill Hiles accepted the job of head marshall and whisker enforcement officer for the Galt Whiskerino Club Wednesday night at a meeting of the club held in Gianelli’s Y dining room. Assistant marshalls listed are: Domenico Menicucci, Art Gross and L. Jobe. Deputies listed are H.B. Otto, Oscar Doering, William Rhotan and Him Bagley.
In the school elections held here in Galt last week, the incumbents in each case were reelected to office. They are Mr. Adams on the high school board, and Mr. McKean and Mr. Bechthold on the elementary school board.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Davenport are the new parents of a son, Joe Dee, born at Mason Hospital on May 22.
Sharon Susan is the name of Mr. and Mrs. Fernando Cinquinis daughter who was born at Mason Hospital May 22.
Nancy Harriet is the name chosen by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dale for their daughter who was born at Buchanan Hospital May 12.

The Division of Highways will conduct a public auction to dispose of a parcel of excess land located in the Lindberg-Frantson Tract, in the city of Galt. The parcel of land contains approximately 12,300 square feet and is being sold in connection with freeway construction from the San Joaquin County line to 1½ miles south of the Cosumnes River.
Dennis Sartini, graduating Galt Union High School senior, has been awarded the John Phillips Sousa national award for excellence in music and for contribution to the field of music as a participant.

Galt Joint Union High School senior and student body president Gary Silva Jr. received a cash award at the finals of Bank of America’s 1979 Achievement Awards held on May 23. Gary, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Silva of Herald, won $500 as a runner-up in the vocational arts study field.
June 1, 1989
A tentative plan for a new Galt middle school received approval from the board of trustees of Galt Joint Union Elementary School District. The new school is part of a proposal by Lukenbill Enterprises to build a shopping center on the current site of Galt Middle School. The new school will be built on 15 acres on Harvey Road on property that will be annexed to the city of Galt. The company intends to begin building the school in February 1990 and construction of the shopping center is also expected to begin sometime next spring.
Crystal Dawn Wuchter accepted proposal of marriage from Airman Recruit John Harrison Schulz. The bride-elect, daughter of Don and Lynnette Wuchter Jr., is an automated accounting major at Galt High School and will graduate this month. Airman Recruit Schultz, son of Bill and Larita Shinaver, is a 1988 graduate of Lodi High School.
