They are small in numbers but those numbers are made up of doers. The Kiwanis Club of Galt sponsors numerous events throughout the year, as well as sponsoring youth projects and scholarships. They meet once a month, early on a Saturday morning for coffee and sweets, and the atmosphere is like an extended family.
Each member shares what’s going on in their lives with both happy and sad stories while placing bills in a little sack.
Kathy Loesch thanked the whole group for the success at a recent Harvest Festival the group sponsored free of charge to children and their families.
Liz Aguire Haglund is a charter member of the club of 14 members.
“Service to the community was why I joined,” Aguire Haglund said. “I started in 1992.”
Lisa Globke said she was hooked after participating in the Adopt-a-Family during a holiday season where each member sponsors a family, and gifts of food, clothes and toys for the kids are given. Sharlyn Miller has been participating since she was in high school as a Key Club member.
Aguire Haglund said although their numbers are small, each one is very active in all their endeavors.
The group hopes to encourage new people to join their efforts, which include: Back to School Shopping for deserving kids, the Fall Festival, Christmas Adopt-a-Family, the Dog Show at the Bark Park, Free Pool Day in June and Senior Bingo in both spring and fall.
This month the club will have a fundraiser at Stratton’s Pizza – today, Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Just mention Galt Kiwanis, and the club will receive 25 percent of the sales.
On Nov. 23 from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., the Kiwanis will sponsor a Valley Oaks School beautification day and encourage anyone interested to come out and help.
