Galt Troop & Crew 1119 attended the annual Shooting Sports Weekend held at Camp Lassen in Butte Meadows Sept. 13-15.

The troop has scouts of various learning abilities, and the instructors and staff accommodated every level of ability specific to each scout’s needs.

“These instructors are always so patient and professional with us. I know some of us learn differently, and they always go out of their way to make us feel comfortable while learning,” said Sofia Ramos, a scout with Scout BSA Troop 1119.

Each instructor not only made it an effective learning experience but also very enjoyable, which makes the scouts want to come back every year. That proved true when more than 360 participants from all over the Golden Empire Council (GEC) area attended this year’s event.

All participants were able to experience many different types of shooting sports. Scouts enjoyed trying out LaPorte archery, shotguns, pellet guns, chalk ball, 3D archery, rifles, airsoft, BB guns, archery and black powder rifles. For the first time this year, scouts also had the opportunity to fire a cannon.

In addition, each scout or adult leader was required to go through specialized safety training for each discipline used.

Zach Johnson with Troop 1119 stated, “I really enjoyed learning about proper firearm safety.”

Shooting sports provides fun and adventure for scouts. It teaches safety, skills, discipline, self-reliance, sportsmanship and conservation – all elements of good character that scout leaders strive to instill.

Troop, Crew and Ship 1119 in Galt meets every Monday at the VFW Hall, 550 C Street at 7 p.m. For more information, email bsatroopandcrew1119@gmail.com.

For the past five years, local residents Dennis and Diane Weiss, with the help of 35 NRA, USA Archery Instructors and staff, organized the shooting sports events for the GEC.

Volunteers went above and beyond in obtaining donations, additional volunteers and staff to work the event. This year, more than 50 vendors donated supplies, items for the special give-away bags each participant received and big-ticket items for the show-stopping drawing.
