In 1897, William W. Bottimore purchased 400 acres of land northwest of Herald, where he planted trees and shrubs and a 30-acre vineyard of Tokay grapes. It was in the vineyard that Bottimore installed an innovative irrigation system to water the grapes. He used the first centrifugal pump in Sacramento County. This type of pump is equipped with a vaned impeller that, as it rotates, draws liquid to its center and discharges flow peripherally outward in a radial direction, all powered by a motor. Bottimore also maintained a dairy and raised grain, cattle, horses and mules.
