The Galt Police Department is asking the public for information about an attempted bank robbery that occurred March 28 at the Farmers & Merchants Bank branch on C Street.

The police said in a release that a man entered the branch at 12:43 p.m. and demanded money from a teller.

“The suspect motioned to being armed with a firearm, but no weapon was observed by the bank employees,” the agency said.

The would-be robber wasn’t able to get any cash and fled before officers arrived at the scene. No bank employees were injured.

When a Herald reporter visited the branch that afternoon, the lobby of the bank was temporarily closed and an employee gave customers alternative ways to get service.

Galt PD’s release described the perpetrator as “a light-skinned adult male, wearing a red/black checkered hat, black face mask, dark jacket, blue pants and possibly black and white shoes.”

The police encouraged anyone who recognizes the perpetrator or has information about the attempted robbery to call nonemergency dispatch at 209-366-7000, Option 1. Callers may remain anonymous.
