Georgiena Irene Gomes

Georgiena Irene Nunes Gomes, 94, passed away on Aug. 18, 2021. Georgiena was born on Dec. 30, 1926 in Caruthers, Calif. and settled in the Galt area where she lived for 63 years.

She started working at a local bank when she was 18-years-old and worked there for three years.

Georgie was the wife of a dairyman and lived on the Liberty Road Dairy for 57 years. Along with her homemaking duties, Georgie was a cannery worker for Tri Valley Growers where she worked for 21 years.

Georgie belonged to Catholic churches in Galt and Lockford and was a member of Lodges PFSA , UPPEC, SPRSI and Teamsters.

She enjoyed gardening, both indoor and outdoor plants, and was known to have a green thumb. She also enjoyed embroidery and sewing (mostly mending holes and hemming).

Georgie loved to travel. She was able to take a six week trip to her homeland - The Azores Islands - visiting six different islands along with her husband Joe and his sister Hazel and Al Garcia.

She and her sisters took many trips together to Reno, Pismo Beach and Hawaii. She went to Branson, Missouri when it first became popular.

Georgie traveled many times to wherever her family and friends were.

She loved all her family. She enjoyed getting together for holidays and any kind of party - making sure she brought her best dishes to eat.

Georgie was a fabulous cook and baker. She was widely known for her sweet bread. It took all day to make but it was handed out within a couple of days around Easter.

She loved attending as many Portuguese fiestas around the state as she could and making and eating sopas

Georgie is survived by brother Tony Nunes; children Dorothy (Ken) Downs, David (Judy) Gomes, Calvin (Pansy) Gomes, Bernadette (Doug) Durossette, and Christopher (Sharon) Gomes; 10 grandchildren; 10 step grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death two years ago by her husband Joe after 71 years of marriage.

Services will be held Aug. 26 at St. Christopher's Catholic Church, 950 S. Lincoln Way in Galt. The Rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m. and funeral at 11 a.m.
