Joe A. Gomes

Joe A. Gomes, 93, of Galt died Nov. 30, 2019 in Elk Grove following a year of heart disease. He was born Sept. 12, 1926 in Stratford, Calif.

Joe lived in Fresno and worked with his father at the family dairy, then moved to Lodi to work at his sister-in-law and brother-in-law’s dairy until he was able to buy his own Grade “B” Dairy on Liberty Road where he raised five children with his loving wife of 71 years, Georgiena. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and was a retired dairyman, part-time carpenter and milk truck driver. Joe attended St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Galt and St. Joachim Catholic Church in Lockeford. He enjoyed bowling and traveling, and he could fix or patch up anything, as well as build things on his own.

Surviving Joe are his wife of 71 years, Georgiena; five children, Dorothy (Ken) Downs, David (Judy) Gomes, Calvin (Pansy) Gomes, Bernadette (Doug) Durossette, Chris (Sharon) Gomes; 20 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Hazel Garcia of Fresno and Violet Gattenby of Anacortes, Wash.

A Catholic Rosary will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Galt, with Funeral Mass following at 10 a.m. Committal will be at 12 p.m., in the Galt Cemetery. Ben Salas Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
