John P. Ferreira

John Pereira Ferreira, 67, of Galt passed away peacefully with family by his side on Jan. 16, 2020, after losing a brief battle with cancer. He was born on Nov. 30, 1952 in Santo Amaro, Ribeirinha, Terceira, Azores. He served three years in the Air Force stationed on a U.S. Air Base in Lajes, Terceira, Azores, then immigrated to Elk Grove in February 1979. On April 28, 1979, he married Lina Vitoria in Thornton. Together they had a son, Johnny, followed by daughter, Diane. John always worked hard to provide for his family. He started off working on dairies, milking and as a foreman for 23 years, then became a school janitor for the last 17 years. He also started up his own landscaping business in 2002, which he had been running for the last 17 years.

John enjoyed watching soccer, especially his favorite team Benfica; he also enjoyed watching his 49ers play. We all know he had a hand in this last game, which has now placed the Niners in the Super Bowl. He spent most of his free time in his garden, growing various fruits and vegetables that he was proud to share with everyone. John’s favorite place to vacation was anywhere near the ocean where he loved to fish and just relax. He loved spending time with his family, especially his eight grandchildren who he adored.

Preceding him in death were his parents Antonio and Maria De Jesus Ferreira, his younger sister Nivea Ferreira, his youngest sister Selena Ferreira at three months old, his mother-in-law Maria Vitoria, and his brother-in-law Frank Vitoria.

Surviving him is his wife of 40 years, Lina Ferreira; son Johnny (Melanie) Ferreira of Delhi and daughter Diane (Garry) Tarifa of Galt; eight grandchildren, Sergio Tarifa, Sydney Tarifa, Serena Tarifa, Sophie Tarifa, Lucas Ferreira, Anthony Ferreira, Santos Tarifa and Makayla Ferreira; sister Maria De Jesus (Jose) Fraga of Terceira, brother Antonio (Vera) Ferreira of Brazil, brother Joe (Eva) Ferreira of Texas, sister Alcinha (Francisco) Rego of Terceira, sister Zelia (Antonio) Couto of Terceira, brother Francisco (Manuela) Ferreira of Terceira, father-in-law Francisco Vitoria of Galt, brother-in-law Joe (Teresa) Vitoria of Galt, and sister-in-law Bernadette Vitoria of Galt; three godsons, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and two aunts.  He will be deeply missed by all.

A public visitation will be held on Monday, Jan. 27 from 2-6 p.m. at the Lodi Funeral Home, 725 S. Fairmont Ave., in Lodi, followed by a rosary at 6 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 10 a.m. at St Christopher’s church, 950 S. Lincoln Way, in Galt.
