Michael Lee Payne, beloved husband of Barbara Payne, passed on to an everlasting peace on Saturday, July 18, 2020. After an extended illness battling COPD and complications of the coronavirus, he passed away quietly at Kaiser hospital. Prior to his illness, he worked for the County of Sacramento Department of Engineering, Building Inspection Division. He retired after 20 years of service to Sacramento County. For years, he and his wife Barbara enjoyed fishing, NHRA and boating. He especially liked fishing for sturgeon. He had a soft spot in his heart for children and annually paid for the children from the local Head Start school to have their own garden at the Community Garden by Harvey. Park.
Michael was born in the City of San Bernardino Feb. 22, 1954 to Shirley and Edward Lee Payne. He graduated from Nicolaus High School in 1971. He is survived by his mother, Shirley Payne; brother Raymond and sister Terry; children, Michelle, Scott and Suzanne. He has six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He and Barbara have lived in Galt for about 30 years. They owned the Olde Towne Gift Shoppe for eight years. Michael was very supportive of his wife’s work in the city of Galt where she served 12 years on the City Council and a term as mayor.
Due to the Coronavirus, no Celebration of Life ceremony is planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, Michael had requested that a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital would be appreciated.
