Gene Wilburn

Homer Eugene Wilburn, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and pastor to many went home to be with The Lord on July 23, 2022.

Homer Eugene “Pastor Gene” was born September 14, 1930, in San Bernardino, California to Maynard Hayden Wilburn and Wilma Susie Janette Wilburn.

Gene was the youngest son of six children. He spent his childhood years growing up in the orange groves of Highland, in San Bernardino county. It is here that he met and married his childhood sweetheart Lorraine Drake.

Gene and Lorraine spent the early years of their marriage in Cheyenne, Wyoming with their two young children Michael and Linda. In 1950 they made their way back to California. It was during this time that Gene and Lorraine put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior. Soon after Gene felt called to go into the Ministry. In 1952 he began his pastoral studies at Cal Baptist University in Riverside, California. During this time he met many friends and colleagues that would become lifelong friends.

In 1956 Gene and Lorraine moved to Galt, California. It was here he founded Galt Bible church. Galt Bible Church first met in homes, soon moved to the Galt Woman's Club House, and then to the present location on Church Street. These were wonderful years that also brought the addition of Rebecca and Lori into the Wilburn home. Gene and Lorraine also welcomed many wonderful friends and neighbors from the

Galt community.

Pastor Gene loved his years at Galt Bible Church. He also served 3 terms as president of Northern California IFCA. He was President of the Bible Church Crusade and served on several other mission boards. Gene enjoyed holding Bible conferences. Many of these conferences took him throughout California, Hawaii, Idaho, Utah, South American and Cypress, Greece.

In 1981 Pastor Gene founded a second church, Big Valley Bible Church where he remained in leadership until his retirement in 2018.

Pastor Gene was a friend to many. He took up real estate in the 1980s. His friends from Dry Creek Reality were very important to him and he enjoyed helping people find the perfect home.

Gene loved to travel with Lorraine. During his early years, many of their vacations would include friends and other families. Pastor Gene loved people and there was always room for someone else at the Wilburn table or vacation cabin.

The love of his life for 75 years was his wife, Lorraine. The passion of his life was serving to Lord. His goal was to “lead God's people safely home”.

He could be counted on to be at the bedside of the dying, ready to come if you were hurting or just needed advice. He rejoiced in many births and a multitude of marriages. He was a blessing to many and he was equally blessed by so many.

Words cannot express how much we will all feel his absence, but we will cherish the memories and legacy he left.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Maynard and Susie Wilburn, Elmer and Vera Spence, his siblings, Bud, Richard, Dorothy, Mary Ellen, and Joann, his son Michael Wilburn his granddaughter Julie Shipman.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine, daughter Linda Shipman, Rebecca (Becky) and Edward Howell, Lori and Larry Martin, Daughter-in-law Bernice Wilburn, Step-brother Nolan and Connie Spence.
