Walter Merrill Caldwell

Walter Merrill Caldwell

Walter Merrill Caldwell, affectionately known by family and friends as “Walt from Galt,” unexpectedly passed away in his sleep on March 29, 2021. He was 70. Walter was born on Dec. 18, 1950.

As a lifelong resident of Galt, he enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, riding his 1974 Harley Davidson and spending time with family and friends. His love of the outdoors started as a child when he joined the Boy Scouts and enjoyed many outdoor activities with his dad, who also happened to be the Scout Leader.

Walter had a strong work ethic that earned him multiple awards for perfect attendance at school and work, and he felt a sense of duty to his community, so he became a volunteer firefighter for the city of Galt while still in high school. He enjoyed fighting grass and structure fires until he left the department in 1987.

He worked for Goehring Meat Company until they closed and then started working for General Mills as a cereal maker/spice mixer for over 27 years until his retirement in 2013.

Walter is survived by his two sons and their families, Bryan, Jill and Caelyn Caldwell; Kevin, Kristen, Xander and Caleb Caldwell; sister Susan Meidinger and nieces Stephanie Reynante and Rebecca Gonzales.

A memorial will be held at Brewsters Bar and Grill, 201 Fourth Street in Galt, on Aug. 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
