In what could have been their final softball game had the season actually occurred, Anabelle Buchanan of Liberty Ranch and Haley Sanchez of Galt High School were selected to play on the Small Schools’ South roster of the Optimist All-Star softball game, which honors the top senior high school players in the area.

The game would have been one of two games honoring local senior players, the other game featuring teams from large schools.

The 43rd Optimist High School Softball All Star games were set for May 27. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, for the protection of the players, coaches, officials and fans, the Optimist Club cancelled the games.

These Optimist All Star games would have provided the top senior athletes of Sacramento and Greater Sacramento the venue to showcase their skills and prowess. Their selection was to honor them and their schools, and would have reflected the culmination of their hard work, diligence and excellence in this sport and their school, as well as their coach’s commitment toward their players’ endeavors.

In spite of these games being canceled, the Optimist Club said that it felt “outstanding seniors should be recognized” in the media announcement that was released on May 21. Due to their decision, there were four selection committees (North/South and Small Schools/Large Schools) that selected the outstanding players.

In her last full season, Buchanan had 13 hits and scored 13 runs and had nine RBI along with a .448 batting average in her junior year. Buchanan had a 2.33 ERA and struck out 10 in six innings.

As a veteran on the Warrior softball team, which went 3-3 this season before the season was stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic, Sanchez had five RBI, three hits and four runs in four games this year. Sanchez had a 2.33 ERA over three innings as one of the Warriors’ five pitchers.
