Seniors on the 2021 Liberty Ranch varsity boys soccer season that concluded in May received a surprise at the end of their short season when the Galt Lions Club gave them Amazon gift cards as well as handwritten cards of congratulations as they enter the next chapter of their lives.

The Sac-Joaquin Section soccer season, like other sports in 2021, had been shorter than normal due to the altered school year that was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hawk head coach Garett Arechiga said that he and his staff had approached the Lions Club to see if they could donate in an effort to commemorate the senior athletes’ final season.

Due to issues with time (the season lasted just over a month), the Lions Club was unable to contribute to Arechiga’s original inquiry about backpacks during the season.

The Lions Club wasn’t about to leave it at that, however.

“They called me with about a week left in the school year and asked how many seniors we had. They sent them off with a nice Amazon gift card along with a congratulations card,” Arechiga said July 19.

The Hawks’ four seniors, Roberto Gomez, Sergio Martinez, Damion Ochoa and Chris Posas, were unaware that anything was in the works to cap off their first-place, landmark Sierra Valley Conference season, which had included a huge win over city rival Galt High School among the highlights.

“They were very excited. Not too much was expected, they weren’t even expecting to have a banquet,” said Arechiga. “I was very appreciative. I’m a very firm believer that it kind of takes a village, and that kind of solidified that. Everything was just so condensed, so being able to give them that, it solidifies that there’s kind of a village behind everybody. I’m very thankful to be part of this community.”
