The Liberty Ranch Hawks’ Itzel Medina-Valdez, the sole representative of the city of Galt at the CIF State Wrestling Championships, went 1-2 in the 106 weight class to finish the wrestling season in her second straight state appearance.

Itzel-Medina, a junior, faced Nyla Valencia of Sobrato (Valencia would go on to win the 106 championship) in the first round then won her next match against Valeri Gurule-Metzig of Hilltop by fall. Liv Villanueva of Northgate, the eventual eighth place winner, defeated Medina-Valdez in the second consolation round by fall.

Medina-Valdez represented the Hawks at state in her sophomore year as well; she placed fourth at this year’s Masters meet prior to competing at the state championships, which were held Feb. 27-29 in Bakersfield.

James Logan won the state championship in the team standings after scoring 94 points, San Fernando was second with 90 points and Pitman scored 64 points to place third.
