Liberty Ranch faced the Natomas Nighthawks last Thursday and showed them who the dominant Hawks were. The game was changed to Thursday night by request of the CIF league to compensate for the referee shortage they are experiencing.

Arthur Draeger was the first to score by running the ball into the end zone. Julian Rodrigues made good on the extra point.

Nick Camarillo was in the right place and grabbed an interception, giving the ball back to the Hawks. Gavin O’Brien was the next to score on a rush. Natomas was not able to move the ball and punted. Draeger scored again, finishing off the first quarter 21-0.

Natomas is known for speed but Head Coach Warren Schroeder had a plan.

“The game plan defensively was to be disciplined and contain their speed, which I felt we did a great job doing,” said Schroeder. “Offensively, we wanted to establish the ground game, start fast and secure the football, which we had success doing.”

Quarterback Kymani Fenika led the offense to score 49 points in two and a half quarters of play and grabbed up two interceptions on defense.

Draeger then caught a 35-yard pass from Kenika and gained a down. Draeger ran it in two plays later to add more points to his resume.

Cody Smith, who was unstoppable with three sacks, took care of the quarterback and allowed the Hawks to get the ball once again.

Draeger took advantage and ran it in again, making the score 35-0.

Natomas was able to escape and score, but the extra point was no good, finishing the first half of the game 35-6.

Both teams would score twice in the second half for a final score of Liberty Ranch 49, Natomas 20.

Draeger dominated the field with 216 yards rushing, 37 yards receiving and 11 yards on a kick return for a total of 264.

Fenika grabbed a respectable 104 yards total.

Draeger scored four touchdowns, Gavin O’Brien scored two, Cody Smith scored one and kicker Julian Rodriguez collected seven points on PATs.

Coach Schroeder is looking forward to a good game this Friday at Linden. “This was a good test for us, and we look forward to continue getting better and being tested again by a very good Linden team.”
