The Warriors shut out Atwater 4-0 to move on to the D III semifinals against Wood at Galt High School Feb. 26.

The game was scoreless in the first half until the Warriors went on to create a barrage of goals, starting with about 36 minutes left in the second half.

Armed with a 1-0 lead, Galt then scored at the nine-minute mark, and again at the seven-minute mark and the final goal was scored at the three-minute mark for the 4-0 win.

Jose Santos scored twice, Sebastian Baez scored once and Alexis Gonzalez scored. Francisco Alvarez, Gonzalo Garcia, German Ramirez and Enrique Hernandez all assisted for Galt.

Galt had had shots deflected by Atwater in the first half as well as a shot that flew over the cross bar and one that missed just to the left with less than two minutes before the half.

Of the Warriors’ scoreless first half, Galt head coach Freddy Renteria said discussed the Warriors’ opportunities, then noted the difference in the second half.

“We had chances, we just weren’t able to put them away,” Renteria said. “The one that we scored in the second half, it just trickled through their defense and luckily Sebastian was making a great run and he was able to finish it off and the last three goals came after they got red carded, they started to stumble a bit.”

Wood, which upset its opponents in the first two rounds of the playoffs, is ranked 12th. The Wildcats finished 7-3 in the Monticello Empire League with a 7-3 record and were 15-9-2 entering the semifinals.

“They gave us a tough game, they didn’t really let us break though and we felt like we still could have played better. We’re going to have another tough game this Tuesday,” Renteria said of the Feb. 25 match against Wood.

The winner of the Feb. 25 semifinal will play the winner of the East Union-Patterson game in the D III Championship Saturday.
