Another season with yet another league championship plus a leading performance on the field turned into top honors this month for Galt High School’s Gonzalo Garcia and head coach Freddy Renteria.
Garcia was voted Sierra Valley Conference Co-MVP and Renteria was voted SVC Co-Coach of the Year after both helped the Warriors earn their seventh straight league championship.
Garcia led the Warriors with 21 goals and 15 assists and averaged 1.3 goals per game this season.
The Warriors finished the year with a 10-0 SVC record to maintain their perfect undefeated streak in league, which has been running since 2017.
Garcia, a senior midfielder, helped his team move on to the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, where they reached the SJS Championship game for the fourth time in the past five seasons.
Renteria has coached the Warriors all five of those seasons and has coached the Warriors along with Dane White since 2015.
Angus Cummings of El Dorado was also voted SVC MVP and shares the title with Garcia, while the Cougars’ coach Steve Beck shared Coach of the Year honors with Renteria.
Six other Warriors were voted All-League: Francisco Alvarez, Alexis Gonzalez, Macario Bermudez, Daniel Maravilla, Jose Santos and Enrique Cruz all made the list after helping the Warriors go 22-3-1 this season overall.
Alvarez, a senior, had six goals and three assists, Gonzalez, also a senior, scored 19 goals and had 13 assists, and Cruz, also a senior, had 15 goals this season. Maravilla, the Warriors’ goalkeeper, helped limit opponents to a combined total of 14 goals in 26 games, while Santos and Bermudez, also seniors, played key figures at midfield and defense to round out the Warriors’ strong senior class.
