Wednesday night’s quad dual scrimmage marks the start of wrestling season for Liberty Ranch Hawks. Liberty Ranch, River City High, Casa Roble and Cordova engaged in a four-way quad meet Wednesday to close out scrimmage season.

This year’s version of Liberty Ranch wrestling will be led by seniors Kinyaa’aanii Nuno and Michael Negrete. Both wrestlers had a great “COVID season” last year in a very short season. Nuno only lost one match to a Casa Roble wrestler then ended the year in a very tough and largest weight class at the unofficial state meet.

Kinyaa’aanii was wrestling at a very high level at the end of last season, so high expectations are set for him this year.

Seniors Michael Negrete, Rylan Mitchell, Jarrett Kerin and Gavin Voyles will round out the leadership roles for Liberty Ranch. Junior Aiden White has improved his overall abilities by wrestling the entire summer and fall and ended up with three wins Wednesday night.

Underclassmen Brannen Cathey (sophomore) and Paul Johnson (freshman) will be really counted on to produce wins in the middle of the weight class lineup. Cathey and Johnson have been wrestling about 10 years already, and as young wrestlers already bring a lot of knowledge. Johnson is already ranked 34th in the state as a freshman.

Junior Kaylee Ceja will lead girls wrestling.

Ceja almost made it to the state competition in her freshman year. Freshman Baylee Cathey has been wrestling for many years already in the youth divisions and even won a state title in the summer wrestling youth leagues. Desiree Alvarez will complete the rest of the girls’ team.

Now that scrimmage season is officially over, the girls will complete at the Folsom Invitational this weekend. The boys’ first tournament will be Dec. 4 at Ceres High School.
